That’s correct!
A cowboy slides off his galloping horse. Using speed, strength, and great timing, he hooks his arms around a steer’s horn and wrestles it to the ground. The fastest wrestlers can do the job in just a few seconds.
Sorry, wrong answer!
Rider and horse race around three barrels arranged in a cloverleaf pattern. The fastest wins. If a barrel gets knocked over, time is added to the clock. For most rodeos, this event is for cowgirls only.
A cowboy works closely with his horse. He loops a rope around a calf’s neck. The horse stops. The cowboy dismounts, runs as fast as he can to the calf, throws the calf down, and ties three of its legs together. Meanwhile, the horse pulls back on the rope to keep it tight—but without dragging the calf. The calf isn’t harmed. Ranchers still use tie-down roping to catch calves and give them medicine.
Some competitors say this may be the toughest rodeo event of all. A cowboy must stay on a bucking horse for eight seconds using just one thick rein. He can’t touch any part of the horse with his free hand.
Let’s Go to the Rodeo: Quiz
Test your rodeo knowledge!
Want to jump on a 2,000-pound animal with dangerous horns? Bull riders do. A good bull rider has great balance, flexibility, and reflexes. The rider grasps a rope tied around the bull’s chest. The bull bucks, darts, and spins—anything to shake that rider off!
A cowboy and his horse work together to catch a calf using a rope attached to the horse’s saddle. The calf gets a head start. The horse moves to just the right spot so the cowboy can throw the rope. When the calf is caught, the horse stops. The rope breaks away from the saddle. A piece of cloth tied to the rope shows judges the calf has been captured.
The ultimate relay race! A team of two riders works with one horse. The first rider circles the arena once. Then the rider jumps off the horse just as the second rider jumps on—while the horse is still running!
