That’s correct!
Most guide companies say you should start
training for the climb at least eight to 12
months in advance. That includes endurance
and strength training. You’ll have to climb for
hours, and you need to be able to do that
without collapsing. Plus, you must climb other
mountains before trying Everest.

How To Climb Mount Everest
START
Mount Everest is the highest mountain on Earth! Climbing it is uncomfortable, expensive, and dangerous. So why do some people want to summit it? “Because it’s there.” That’s what mountaineer George Mallory reportedly said. (Sadly, he lost his life on Everest during a 1924 expedition.)
Take our quiz to learn about preparing for a successful climb.
You’ll need different types of layers, but one of the most
important is a heavy down parka. Down is made of
fluffy, soft feathers that grow under the tougher, outer
feathers of a duck or goose. It is lightweight and very
good for trapping and holding warmth. Temperatures
at the summit are always below freezing. It’s also
extremely windy. One of the best months to climb
Everest is May. Even though that’s one of the warmest
months, the temperature at the summit tends to stay
close to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
There are some tall mountains on each of these
continents. But most of the world’s tallest are in Asia’s
Himalayas. That mountain range stretches for 1,500
miles! It touches six countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan,
China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan. Mount Everest is on
the border between Nepal and Tibet (a region controlled
by China). Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, Nepal, is
the closest airport. It is named for Sherpa Tenzing
Norgay and New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary. They were the first to reach Everest’s summit in 1953.
Typically, an Everest journey takes about two months.
That’s because it takes time to adapt to the high altitude.
It’s harder to get your normal amount of oxygen. Most
people live somewhere between 300 and 8,000 feet
above sea level. The two Everest base camps are about
16,900 and 17,500 feet above sea level. So most climbers
spend several weeks there to get used to the altitude. The
summit is 29,032 feet above sea level. No one is ready for
that without serious preparation! Most trekkers use
bottled oxygen to recover too.
Since the trek is so dangerous, most people
should go with a guide. Many Everest guides
are Sherpas. The Sherpa are a people group
who live in the Himalayas. Many are highly
skilled mountaineers who make their living
by guiding climbers. Other workers help
carry food and other supplies.
For most hikes, all you need to do is start
walking. But Everest is different. You need
legal permission to climb the mountain. It
doesn’t come cheap! The permit costs about
$11,000. That’s just for the climb. You also
need a visa (permission to enter the country)
and permits to visit the national park and base
camp around Everest. Those cost much less—
about $200 altogether.
