Build a Solar Oven
Build a Solar Oven
Can you build your own oven?
You can indeed.        All you         need         is . . .
The Sun is a tremendous gift that shows God’s care for His world, creatures, and people. It keeps us alive with warmth. It gives us light to see by. And, with just a few basic supplies added, it can even cook a s’more!
• a pizza box    (empty, for now) • scissors • tape • a stick • aluminum foil • plastic wrap • black construction paper • s’mores supplies   (graham crackers,      marshmallows,    chocolate) And, of course,  THE SUN
From the rising of the Sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised! — Psalm 113:3
Follow these steps to harness the Sun’s energy for your own solar oven:
1. Cut a square in the top of the pizza box to create a secondary flap.
2. Cover the bottom of the flap in shiny foil. This will reflect sunlight.
3. Line the sides of the inside of the box with foil.
4. Place black construction paper on the floor of the box. This will absorb and hold heat.
5. Cover the front and back of the opening in the top of the box with clear plastic wrap. This will allow sunlight through while trapping heat.
6. Place your s’mores inside!
7. Use your stick to prop open the flap at a downward tilt to reflect sunlight into your oven. Adjust and turn toward the Sun as needed.
8. Let it cook! Soon your chocolate should soften and your marshmallow should get melty.
* If you’re not a fan of s’mores, you can always try melting cheese on nacho chips instead.
9. Give thanks and enjoy your s’more. Yum!
