hitting the brakes
in Daytona
Beach, Florida.
Thor Heyerdahl's raft
was named Kon Tiki.
Rafting, Anyone?
In 1947, Thor Heyerdahl
took five companions
on a journey from South
America to the islands
east of Tahiti. But this
was no pleasure cruise.
Mr. Heyerdahl built a
40-foot raft from materials
people might have used in
ancient times. Why? He wanted
to prove that people could have
come first from the Americas to
Polynesia long ago. The crew sailed for
101 days, facing sharks and rough seas.
Finally, the men landed in Polynesia. Does this prove
Polynesians came from South America? Not exactly.
But it does show that the journey could have been made.
Longest Bike Ride in one CountryThis Guinness world record belongs to Lieutenant

a wheelie? Kurt Osburn holds that record. He wheelied
2,839.6 miles from California to Florida in 1999.
