Skateboarding comes from surfing. Polynesians
(people living in present-day Hawaii) surfed ocean
waves starting longer ago than anyone can remember.

So when did the surfboard get wheels?
It seems to have happened as far back as the
1800s. Back then, Americans strapped roller
skates onto wooden crates. This invention got
an upgrade around the 1950s. Folks in
Southern California wanted to “surf” their steep
hills. They attached clay wheels to wooden
pallets. Manufacturers started making
skateboards for sale in 1959.

Can you do
any of these
skateboard
tricks?
What can you do?
Hopi teens saw a need for a skate park in their community,
so they built one. What needs can you see in your
community? What can you do about them? Who can
you ask for help with the project you have in mind?
